Slings vs. Carriers

Posted by Maria on 1/29/2014
To sling or to carry, that is the question plaguing many new parents. The hands-free convenience of a baby sling can be very attractive, but what happens when she is fussy, or sick? A carrier allows for portability and stability in a cushioned seat, but do parents lose key biological bonding time with their newborn?

To Be or Not To Be BPA-free?

BPA has been in the news a lot, and many manufacturers are offering alternative container options to plastics made with BPA, but what is it, should parents be concerned, and why?

BPA stands for bisphenol A, a chemical that has been used in production of plastics for over fifty years. BPA can be found in most polycarbonate plastics. Polycarbonate plastics are commonly used to store food and drinks (like the water bottles at the local grocery or gas station). It is also used in epoxy resins to line cans for some foods, in beverage caps, and even in some dental sealants.

Gum Massages

Infant oral hygiene is often overlooked by new parents, but baby gum care is just, if not more, important than brushing once the first little teeth have arrived. To combat bacteria, promote healthy gum growth, and minimize discomfort during tooth eruption, gum massage and cleaning is essential, and can be started from birth. No need to worry about toothbrushes and toothpaste to start; a clean washcloth or sterile gauze, moistened with some water, can be used to wipe down an infantís gums and the gentle massage action promotes blood flow to the gum line.
